Watney Tames Bethpage Black and Garcia with a Victory at the Barclays

By Darren

Nick Watney didn’t set the course record at Bethpage Black, although he came within one stroke of tying it on Thursday in the first round with a six under 65.  Instead what he did was remain steady, calm, and error free throughout the four days of The Barclays, the first round of the PGA Playoffs.  Watney carded a two under 69 on Sunday; he hit 17 out of 18 greens in regulation, and finished ten under to capture his first win since the 2009 Buick Invitational.  The 31 year old Watney trailed Garcia by two strokes after a bogey on the 5th hole, however he was able to right the ship and shoot 2 under for the remainder of the day, meanwhile Garcia crumbled and bogeyed four of the last eleven holes.  It appeared that Tiger Woods could possibly play a factor as he started Sundays play just four strokes back, however he couldn’t make a move to get into contention.  Watney finished the tournament ten under capturing the victory by three strokes to Brandt Snedeker, while Garcia finished tied for third at six under.  Watney has put himself in tremendous position to capture the $10 million bonus awarded to the leader after the four rounds of the PGA Playoffs.

The second round of the PGA Playoffs which will be the Deutsche Bank Championship and we will see the field narrowed from the top 125 FedEx point leaders at the Barclays to just the top 100.  The field will be narrowed in the third round to the top 70 in FedEx points at the BMW Championship, and then to 30 for the final round which is the Tour Championship.  The leader in points after the Tour Championship will win the FedEx Cup and the $10 million bonus. The runner up will still win an additional $3 million, 3rd place gets $2 million, 4th 1.5 Million, 5th place $1 Million, and each golfer on down the list will receive a bonus based on their placement on the FedEx Standings with 150th place being the final spot to cash in.  By winning The Barclays Nick Watney is now guaranteed a spot in the Tour Championship and has taken over the FedEx point lead, he went from 49th to first with the win.  With three rounds remaining in the playoffs Brandt Snedeker is now in 2nd place behind Watney, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy rank 3rd and 4th respectively. Zach Jonson is currently in fifth, followed by Jason Dufner, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Carl Pettersson, and Sergio Garcia rounding out the top 10. However with the small difference in points the Tour Championship is still up for grabs.  Norton Massachusetts at TPC Boston is where the next round of the PGA Playoffs will take place with Thursday the 30th being the first day of action.
